Samsung SDI expects to start volume production of active-matrix (AM) OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels in the second half of 2007, according to Hyunsook Kim, senior manager, Development Strategy Group, AMOLED Business, Samsung SDI. The maker aims to boost the monthly capacity of AM OLED panels to 4.5 million units in the third quarter of 2008, up from 1.5 million in the second half of 2007, Kim indicated. In the second half of 2006, the maker said it expects the volume production to take place in the first quarter of 2007, sources said. Samsung SDI said the major applications for AM OLED panels in 2007 will remain for small-size displays such as for mobile phones and digital music players. The maker aims to provide 2.2- to 2.6-inch AM OLED panels initially and move to provide 3- to 4-inch displays for applications such as digital still cameras (DSCs) and PDAs, the company said. In 2009, Samsung SDI will start developing 5-inch-and-above AM OLED panels, the maker added. Samsung SDI started constructing AM OLED facilities in 2005, with equipment move-in taking place in the first half of 2006 and production starting in the fourth quarter of the same year, the sources noted. |
