| Green Lighting Dominates Discussions at Cross Strait Lighting Conference |

Green lighting technologies including light-emitting diode (LED), solar power, and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) dominated the topics at the 13th Cross Strait Lighting Technology and Sales Seminar, which was held in November 2006 in Nanchang City of the southeastern mainland Chinese province of Jiangxi last year.
Around 200 specialists from lighting industries, academic circles and government organizations of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait participated in the conference. In the meeting, as many as 85 dissertations on green lighting technologies were presented.
All participants concluded that for the sake of protecting this planet and its ecological environment from being eroded by global warming green lighting technologies like LED, solar energy and CFL must be pushed urgently.
Development of LED Lighting: Build LED lamps into lighting fixtures. LED is known for power conservation and long life span, making it an ideal direct and indirect light source in the future. The lamp is projected to replace traditional light sources in household, office, marketplace, and outdoor lighting applications in five years.
Development of Solar Energy: Power lamps with solar energy. So far, solar energy has been used to power various outdoor lamps including garden lights, landscape lights and streetlights. Applications of the ubiquitous, free energy will be expanded to other outdoor lights soon.
Development of CFL: Replace reactor-type ballasts with electronic ballasts by using compact fluorescent lamps as much as possible. CFL comes with electronic ballast, which conserves much more electricity than do reactor-type ballasts.
In California, U.S., energy-saving lamps are the only legal light sources in public buildings. Other U.S. states are expected to follow suit as the California energy-conservative policy has proved to be successful.
For many years, the Taiwan Lighting Fixture Export Association (TLFEA) and China Illuminating Engineering Society have been co-sponsoring the seminars as an effort to make some contributions to lighting industries on both sides of the Strait.
On the one hand, the exodus of Taiwanese lighting manufacturers to China has helped the latter grow into the world`s largest lighting supplier; on the other hand, TLFEA and the mainland Chinese society have shed light on such industrial growth.
As the production scales in China`s lighting factories expand and quality is upgraded, one is seeing ever wider ranges of issues brought to light at the annual seminar. Participants believe the success of such seminar will help the lighting industries on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to see the light at the end of the tunnel-gradually allowing both parties to play bigger roles as providers of ecological lighting solutions.
